Google for Staff | Enable 2-Step Verification (2FA)

This article details how to enable 2-Step Verification also known as 2 Factor Authentication for your Google account.

Google 2-Step Verification (2FA)

To setup 2FA for your Google account, first make sure you have a phone that you can get direct text message or call on before proceeding:

  1. Login to your Google account in your web browser.

  2. Visit https://myaccount.google.com/security

  3. Make sure you are already on the Security menu on the left. If you are not already there, click on Security.

  4. Click on the > at the right of 2-Step Verification. Note: If you do not see 2-Step Verification as an option, your tech administrator for your Google domain may need to enable 2-Step Verification for you.

    Click on GET STARTED button at the bottom.

  6. Enter your text/phone number to receive a text or a voice call from Google. Select either Text message or Phone call option then click on the NEXT button at the bottom.

  7. Enter the Google code that you receive via text or voice call then click on the NEXT button at the bottom.4

  8. Click on the TURN ON button at the bottom.

  9. Back on https://myaccount.google.com/security page, click on to the right of Backup codes.

  10. Click on the + Get backup codes button at the bottom.

  11. You are presented with ten backup codes. These codes are for if you are unable to access your authenticator app (Forgot your phone, phone was broken, and so on). These codes are SINGLE-USE for each of 8-digit number and will become invalid after using. If you use up bulk of the codes, you will need to regenerate the codes to get ten new codes that also erases the old codes. You can download this file, print this out, or select and copy the numbers. Keep these backup codes locked up or saved somewhere in a different location and not saved in your same Google account. When you are done, click on ← to the left of Backup codes to go to the previous page.

  12. Back on https://myaccount.google.com/security click on to the right of Authenticator App.

  13. Click on the + Set up authenticator button at the bottom.

You will be presented with a QR code in your web browser, open your authenticator app on your mobile phone and scan the QR code to add the code to your authenticator app. (Do not scan the fake QR code used as an example this documentation.) Google Authenticator, Authy, Aegis are some popular authenticator apps .

  15. Enter the code from your authenticator app to finalize and activate the authenticator code for this Google account.

WARNING: If you back out of this step, the generated authenticator QR code will be useless and you will need to redo the authenticator-related steps and use the new generated code.
